Candidate for Camp Hill School Board of Directors
I am a registered nurse and nationally certified in Oncology – I work at Penn State Andrews Patel in the Harrisburg office. I grew up in Sacramento, California, and attended the University of California, Irvine, with a bachelor’s degree in political science, with an emphasis on International Relations. I went through the HACC Nursing Program in 2013 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Millersville University in 2016.
I have lived in Camp Hill for almost 12 years. I am a mother of three – two have already graduated and one is a sophomore at Camp Hill High School. I married a “Camp Hill kid.” My husband Slate grew up in Camp Hill, graduated and went on to the Naval Academy and a 20-year career in the Navy. My youngest daughter, Cate, will be our first K through 12 Camp Hill kid. Our first Camp Hill graduate, Anne, graduated from the University of Delaware last May and chose to be a school teacher as her career path, attesting to her positive experiences at Camp Hill. Our son, Slate Jr., went through the Camp Hill school district, attended our vo-tech school, the Cumberland Perry Area Career Technical Center, and is currently serving in the Navy on the USS Preble in San Diego, CA. For all intents and purposes, we are a military family. We moved 7 times in 13 years; so, I have experience with various schools and school districts.
I am running for the school board as a mother, as a nurse, and as a resident of Camp Hill. We moved back to Camp Hill because of the schools – a private school education for a public-school price. I have volunteered at all three of our schools in Camp Hill and am actively involved as a volunteer on my daughter’s cross country, basketball and track teams. I have been a nurse for Mini-Thon for several years and I have worked as a back-up nurse in the high school nurses office.
As a member of the board, I will work to keep our school at the highest academic level possible. The decisions I make on the school board will be with the focus: “what is best for the academic and well-rounded betterment of our kids?"
· I believe in focusing on what our children need to have success in their lives: whether they choose college or not, I want them to be well-educated and well-prepared to be active contributors in their communities.
· I believe in acceptance, diversity, and understanding. I know first-hand that not all children are created equal – my oldest daughter was very high-achieving throughout high school whereas my son needed an IEP and a little extra help through those same years. Both are happy and successful young adults. This is a testament to the quality education they received in the Camp Hill School District. I will be a compassionate advocate for all students.
· I believe our District’s responsibility is to teach our children HOW to think, not WHAT to think.
They need to learn to think for themselves and make informed decisions based on facts, not whatever it is they learned from their social media feeds.
· For a small school district, I love that we offer such a broad spectrum of opportunities for our students. It is important that we protect that.
I am confident that I am a good representative of our community. Vote Stephanie Johnson for Camp Hill School Board.
